Cellular lightweight concrete (CLC) is an innovative and environmental friendly building material. It provides the advantages of thermal insulation, light weight, reduced cost of production and easy workability.
The optimum mix design for clc blocks is critical for the proper performance of the blocks. This includes proper slurry preparation, admixture compatibility and curing.
The standard foaming agents used in clc blocks are protein based. These are hydrolyzed proteins derived from animal sources such as keratin, cattle hooves, fish scales, blood and saponin.
Foaming agent is a critical component for the correct performance of clc blocks and must be carefully selected. It should be compatible with the binder and the lightweight aggregates, reducing the risk of absorption.
The compressive strength of clc blocks depends on the density and the liquid admixtures used to enhance the binder. As with normal concrete, any liquid admixture should be checked beforehand to ensure that it is compatible with the binder and LWA.
Any kind of water that is commonly used in concrete production may be used as a clc block admixture. However, this should be done with caution as it will be absorbed into the LWA if added too early in the mix.
